Spinzilla 2014: Registration Opens Soon!

Grace selected braids from her Fibre Club stash to spin during Spinzilla 2013 – what will she choose this year?

It’s that time again…

In just one week, participant registration opens for Spinzilla 2014! This is your chance to join Team SweetGeorgia Yarns and spin for fun, charity, and fabulous prizes!

What Is This “Spinzilla” You Speak Of?

Spinzilla is a “Monster of a Spinning Event” presented by The National Needlearts Association’s Spinning & Weaving Group. Each fall handspinners from all over the world compete to see who can spin the most yardage in one week! Join a 25 member team or choose to spin Rogue (by yourself) for a chance to win great fibrey prizes and glory! Contestants pay a small fee when they sign up – 100% of the proceeds go towards the Needle Arts Mentoring Program (NAMP), an outreach program designed to engage children to try the fibres arts with CD spindle packs and other educational materials.

When Does It Take Place?

Spinzilla 2014 takes place from October 6th-12th. This is when will we will spin and ply our yarn, but before then we can get together on our Ravelry Team Forum and start sharing drafting strategy, fibre preparation plans, and what type of yarn you are going to spin!

How Do I Win Prizes?

If Team SweetGeorgia Yarns spins more yardage than any other team, we will win the Golden Niddy Noddy and $25 gift certificates for all team members! Last year we came in 6th place – pretty darn good! This year let’s try to unseat Team Fancy Tiger for the glory!

During the event there will also be random draws for gift certificates and other prizes by the Spinzilla organizers, and if you join Team SweetGeorgia Yarns you will be eligible to win some of our own in-house draws and prizes! Also, any spinner that spins one mile of singles (1,760 yards) will be entered into a special Monster Mile prize draw!

How Can I Participate?

Between August 4th to September 22nd, go to the Spinzilla Sign-Up page for Team SweetGeorgia Yarns. Spinzilla will ask for a small $10 fee that goes towards it’s educational charity. Then keep in touch on-line on Ravelry, Pinterest, and Facebook.

Check out what Team SweetGeorgia Yarns 2013 spun up on our personal Pinterest board: so many beautiful braids of fibre and colourful bobbins!

If you are in the Vancouver area, come past the SGY studio! We will be hosting a few evening spin-ins so local Spinzilla participants can come by and meet each other in person. Are you spinning out-of-town? There is no reason we can’t spin together online with the help of free video chat programs like Skype and Google Hangouts.

For more information about Spinzilla in general, join their mailing list or check out their website and blog.

As the Team SweetGeorgia Yarns captain, I can’t wait to meet the members of our 2014 team! I hope to see returning team-mates and new spinners too! I’m already warming up my wheel and picking out my fibre… join me on our Team SweetGeorgia Yarns Ravelry Forum and let’s get this party started!
